A Clean Energy Future For Half The Price Of A Postage Stamp

Posted on by Karina

This week, the House will consider the American Clean Energy and Security Act (HR 2454) to revitalize our economy by creating millions of new jobs, increase our national security by reducing our dependence on foreign oil, and preserve our planet by reducing the pollution that causes global warming.

Two separate analyses released this week found the American Clean Energy and Security Act would dramatically reduce carbon pollution and support robust economic growth for a minimal cost. After months of exaggerations by opponents of the bill, the two reports projected costs 18 to 40 times smaller than partisan claims:

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) showed the net economy-wide cost of the bill would be modest, “about $175 per household” per year.

The EPA found that the bill would “substantially accelerate the deployment of clean energy technology that will create new jobs” for the household cost of “$80 to $111 dollars per year,” just 22 to 30 cents per day, less than a postage stamp a day, or $7 to $10 per month.

The American Clean Energy and Security Act (ACES) is a good deal for Americans. For 22 cents to 30 cents a day–half the price of a postage stamp, a quarter of a double cheeseburger, four tootsie rolls, or a glass of milk–Americans can build a clean energy economy that would:

CREATE JOBS
1.7 million new jobs
MOVE US TOWARD ENERGY INDEPENDENCE
5 million fewer barrels of oil imported each day
REDUCE POLLUTION
by 2020 the US can reduce pollution equal to eliminating the pollution from 57,000,000 cars
INCREASE ALTERNATIVE ENERGY
20 times more solar power, 500% more wind energy, 350% more biomass, 50% more geothermal
