Each library contains a Presidential museum and offers public programs to give the general public a better understanding of the individual Presidents, the institution of the Presidency, and the American political system.

The Jimmy Carter Library and Museum is one of eleven presidential libraries administered by the National Archives and Records Administration. The Jimmy Carter Library and Museum was dedicated and opened to the public on October 1, 1986. The research room opened January 28, 1987.

The archives is a repository of approximately 27 million pages of Jimmy Carter's White House material, papers of administration associates, including documents, memoranda, correspondence, etc. There are also 500,000 photographs, and hundreds of hours each of audio and video tape.
