When injury or disease leaves a person's blood levels low, doctors must rely on blood donors to replenish it. However, deployments and medical restrictions cause decreases in the donor pool, so the Fort Leonard Wood Blood Donor Center relies heavily on soldiers in basic combat or advanced individual training for their donations.

September is a month of many changes. It is the end of summer, the beginning of cool weather, and classes are back in session for many. September also is the month the ASBP makes an annual pilgrimage to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.

When the ASBP collections team is scheduled to go to Dover Air Force Base, in Dover, Del., the prep work begins early to accommodate the high number of expected donors. So during the most recent blood drive, it was no surprise that more than 100 service members, civilian employees, dependents and retirees came together to donate to the ASBP.
