CASEY GARRISON South Korea - The 2010 Army Emergency Relief campaign held training Feb. 19 in Casey Theater for key personnel housed in units within Area I to gather pledges and allotments from Soldiers who wish to contribute to the campaign. The campaign period will be from March 1 to May 15. The purpose of the campaign is to raise, with the least burden to Army people, funds to help cover financial assistance provided by AER, increase awareness of all Soldiers and their dependents, including spouses and orphans of deceased Soldiers, about the financial assistance available from AER, publicize procedures to obtain AER assistance, and make all Soldiers aware that their contributions help the Army take care of its own.

CASEY GARRISON South Korea - Commanders throughout the Area I footprint came together today outside the site of the new DoDDs school construction to break ground for the renovation and transformation of building 2400 into a DoDDs school serving students from kindergarten to eighth grade. The school will have a capacity of 324 students, will cost $3,400,000, and will be built using Logistics Cost Sharing funds. It will realize only one of the many tour normalization goals command has set before them when it opens July 31.

CASEY GARRISON South Korea - More than 180 Soldiers gathered in Casey Garrison's Carey Fitness Center to compete in the 10th annual 8th U.S. Army Bataan Memorial March Qualifier Feb. 20. The Soldiers could enter in individual competition for men and women or enter in five-man teams. The course covered more than 13 miles winding around both Casey Garrison and Camp Hovey. All competitors are required to wear a 35 pound rucksack on their backs and be in ACUs. Twenty Soldiers will be selected to go to White Sands N.M, to represent the 8th Army in the annual Bataan Memorial Death March held on White Sands Missile Range, N.M. March 21. The top five males and females will be selected along with the top unit team.

Preparing for an upcoming deployment to Afghanistan, Soldiers from 5th Battalion, 25th Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, conducted infantry tactics training at Camp Williams, Utah, Feb. 15-16. Africa's profile rose sharply during the George W. Bush administration. President Bush expressed the strategic change in unequivocal terms: "Africa is increasingly vital to our strategic interests. We have seen that conditions on the other side of the world can have a direct impact on our own security." Bush more than quadrupled the aid sent to Africa. He launched a number of programs that help Africa, including the Millennium Challenge Account, the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, the Africa Education Initiative, the President's Malaria Initiative, the Congo Basin Forest Partnership, and the Initiative to End Hunger in Africa. On the military side, his crowning achievement was the establishment of a new combatant command, Africa Command (AFRICOM), which is adopting a new interagency style to reflect the range of issues it faces from terrorism to AIDS. However, Africans themselves met AFRICOM with skepticism and suspicion.

Darcy Sliger is a devoted mother, who places the lives of her three children above all else. After the birth of her daughter in 2009, she realized that in order to take care of her children, she needed to take care of herself. At five feet five inches tall and 284.8 pounds, Sliger was considered morbidly obese and vulnerable to the many health conditions that come with being overweight. "I just want to be healthy," said Sliger when discussing her decision to undergo gastric bypass surgery to help her lose weight. In July 2009, Sliger took the first step toward transforming her life by attending a bariatric surgery orientation at Womack Army Medical Center.

Through its history, it has evolved to encompass new and innovative equipment and practices while holding firm to its roots. Some of the traditional roles of cavalry in support of larger formations were in reconnaissance, command and control, screening and forward security. Even though the cavalrymen of today may not look or act like the Roman cavalry, its spirit continues.

After almost two years of preparation, Fort Bragg is switching to the General Fund Enterprise Business System. GFEBS will replace over 80 systems that DPW currently uses to maintain various programs across Fort Bragg including the real property system, the financial system and the programs used to track work and service orders. The new system will integrate financial, real property, cost management and performance data into one system.

In response to a Department of the Army directive to reduce petroleum products consumption, Fort Bragg is finally going "green." Warner Barracks' mild Traumatic Brain Injury clinic is working to develop program called Return to Duty, which will ensure a Soldier's preparedness to return to active duty after graduation from the clinic's rehabilitation program. The clinic plans to incorporate pre-deployment training exercises and create mTBI patient teams who will work to complete training missions with the assistance of Bamberg's Training Support Center.

While Company A, 1st Bn., 15th Inf. Regt. Soldiers provided security Feb. 16, 2010, unit leaders, along with PRT Agricultural Advisors, Dr. Mohamed, Dr. Abdul and Bill Baker, escorted representatives of the Director General of Agriculture to five farms to determine if they are suitable sites for plastic tunnel houses.
