U.S. Army Garrison - Miami is promoting strong military families by sponsoring several programs, national and local, to give servicemembers and DoD employees the tools to develop a strong marriage. Joe Walker, garrison family advocacy program manager, arranged for more than 20 military and civilian couples to participate in two separate programs, a Marital and Relationship Conference and "A Weekend to Remember," both at no charge and one with free day care. The weekend conferences were filled with classes, speakers and workshops designed to foster better communications between married and almost-married pairs. The benefit to the military is obvious, Walker said. "When you are talking about marriage counseling you are talking about prevention," he said. "Anything that you can do to ensure the safety and wholeness of a family helps ensure readiness for the mission and helps the families know that we are here for them, the greater military family."

FORT BENNING, GA - Spectators, including active-duty, retired Rangers and family members, filled Briant Wells Gym for the Ranger Rendezvous combatives and boxing tournament Wednesday. FORT BRAGG, N.C. (USASOC News Service, July 27, 2009) - Soldiers from the 4th Psychological Operations Group (Airborne), gathered at the Smoke Bomb Hill Dining Facility for the unit's 2009 Memorial Breakfast July 17. Staff Sgt. Michael A. Dickinson, who died July 17, 2006, while deployed with the 9th PSYOP Battalion to Ar Ramadi, Iraq, was honored during the breakfast. Dickinson's wife, Glorygrace, and four of their five children were in attendance. Capt. Eric Leetch, a chaplain with the 9th PSYOP Bn., said Dickinson sacrificed a lot when he died, but his family that has to deal with the loss of a loved one continues to sacrifice every day.

The Black Daggers opened up the air show each day by jumping in the American Flag for the record-breaking 70,000 spectators. Director of the Prairie Air Show Brett Krause hosted the Paratroopers and was extremely impressed with their precision in landing either on target or up and down the flight line, so the crowd could get an up-close view. The Black Daggers demonstrated their expertise at two shows a day for three days and jumped on to a grocery store parking lot the day before the air show opened, to help promote the weekend activities. The grocery store demonstration also served as a training mission for the Peoria Air National Guard flight crew, 169th Airlift Squadron that provided the jump platform for the team. Shoppers were amazed when the team landed in the parking lot amongst their cars at the Kroger Grocery Store. Team members include: Team Leader, Sgt. 1st Class, Dave Rose; Assistant Team Leader, Staff Sgt. Dewey Vinaya; Team Medic, Staff Sgt. Jason Spinnicchia; Sgt. Tony Galusha, and on hand for this trip, Sgt. Maj. Abe Sanchez.

70,000 spectators were on site in Peoria, IL for the 2009 Prairie Air Show to watch the performance of the USASOC Black Daggers Parachute Demonstration Team and all thanks to the expertise of the Peoria Air National Guard Flight Teams. The 169th Airlift Squadron provided the jump platform for the paratroopers from 09 to 13 July, 2009. One flight team picked up the jumpers at Fort Bragg and brought them back home on 09 and 13 Jul, and another flight crew worked the Paratrooper drop for the air show w-end performances. The air show pilot crews consisted of 2 pilots, a navigator, an engineer, and 2 loadmasters: Maj. Pat Ober, Aircraft Commander; Capt. Mark Ayala, Co-pilot, 1st Lt. Jeff Hilsenbeck, Navigator; Senior Master Sgt., Samantha Yanez, Flight Engineer; Loadmasters, Master Sgt., Brent Simpson and Senior Airman, Brad Emmett, and Senior Airman, Bob Synder, Crew Chief, made up one flight team. Aircraft Commander, Capt. Robert Dodson, Maj. Jeff Herrmann, Co-pilot, 1st Lt. Jeff Hilsenbeck, Navigator, Master Sgt. Matt Stone, Flight Engineer, and Loadmasters, Staff Sgt. Justin Kass and Staff Sgt. James Guetschow, were part of the other flight crew.

A little more than a year ago, the vehicle Mario Barragan was riding in was struck by a roadside bomb in AfghanistanAca,!a,,cs Helmand Province. The blast killed one Soldier and severely wounded Barragan and a fellow Soldier. Barragan, along with two other Soldiers injured in the line of duty, attempted to summit 14,410 foot Mt. Rainier with more surgeries scheduled after the climb.

Hundreds of veterans, fans, and present day paratroopers gather near the Merderet River by the La Fiere bridge for the 65th D-Day Anniversary ceremonies here on Jun 6. Around 300 American, British, French and German paratroopers jumped to commemorate the airborne drop 65-years ago. The ceremony, held at the Iron Mike statue, was highlighted by the presence of over 25 Second World War veterans who participated in an airborne wing exchange between German and American paratroopers.

POINTE-DU-HOC, FRANCE -- Col (Ret) Keith Nightingale, a former commander of both Ranger and 82nd Airborne battalions, and the 1st Ranger Training Brigade, lectures U.S. Army Reserve Soldiers at the monument atop of Pointe-Du-Hoc overlooking Omaha beach on June 5. The Rangers scaled the sheer cliffs to take out this German gun turret that watches over the coast. Today the site has a granite memorial to honor the 2nd Ranger Battalion and their heroic assault. The U.S. Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command (Airborne) is the sole airborne command within the U.S. Army Reserve and is supporting the 65th D-Day Anniversary ceremonies.

The 95th Civil Affairs Brigade (Airborne), the Army's only active-duty civil affairs unit, competed for the first time in the Best Ranger Competition May 8-10. The unit's three teams were led by Command Sgt. Maj. Thomas Wall, the 95th CA Brigade command sergeant major. Wall set the example for his Soldiers by participating in the event.

Two children of a Fort Bragg Special Forces Soldier were honored with the chance to witness last month's Inauguration Day activities at the nation's capital. Solomon McGinty, 14, and his sister, Akaela, 16, both students at Terry Sanford High School in Fayetteville, made the trip to the Washington, D.C. area for the second time in less than 12 months because of their outstanding academic achievements. Akaela, a high school junior, was invited on behalf of Lead America. Solomon was also invited back to Washington, D.C. area because of his nearly two-year involvement with the Congressional Youth Leadership Council.

Many Soldiers attend the Combat Lifesaver's Course throughout their career, learning emergency first aid such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation, rescue breathing and how to control bleeding. "I never thought it would be something that I would need to use," said Spc. Kimberly Hernandez, the administrative assistant for the 2nd Battalion, 1st Special Warfare Training Group (Airborne). For Hernandez, Jan. 25, began like any other day. She had stopped at the store to get her son some candy when her day took a turn. "I had just pulled into the parking lot, when a lady starting screaming that her husband was having a heart attack, that he passed out" she recounted. "She was acting really frantic. I am sure I would have been doing the same thing. She's yelling, screaming. Everyone is just standing there, watching."

Hundreds stood silent in the early morning rain as members of the 1st Special Forces Group paid tribute to a comrade whose name was added to the unitAca,!a,,cs memorial wall Nov. 11. Staff Sgt. David W. Textor, the 163rd name inscribed on the granite wall, is the 25th name added since Sept. 11, 2001. Textor, a native of Jamestown, N.Y., was serving with A Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st SFG, when he was killed July 15 in Mosul, Iraq, during combat operations.

Project Delta, Detachment B-52, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), the most decorated single unit in the Vietnam War, had a memorial stone dedicated in their honor and placed in the Memorial Plaza at the USASOC headquarters.

Joe Gibson received the Silver Star and 44 other Soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment received other combat awards following their recent deployment at a ceremony Sept. 26 at the at Fort Lewis, Wash., presided over by Adm. Eric T. Olson, commander of U.S. Special Operations Command at MacDill Air Force Base, Tampa, Fla. Lt. Gen. Charles H. Jacoby Jr., commanding general, I Corps and Fort Lewis, was in attendance.
