Synopsis of Section 508 Accessibility Requirements

Section 508 requires Federal agencies to ensure that individuals with disabilities who are members of the public or Federal employees have access to and use of electronic and information technology (EIT) that is comparable to that provided to individuals without disabilities, unless an undue burden would be imposed on the agency. The requirements of Section 508 apply to an agency's procurement of EIT, as well as the agency's development, maintenance, or use of EIT. . Learn more at FAR Final Rule. The Section 508 requirements do not apply retroactively to pre-existing EIT. However, as agencies upgrade and change their electronic and information technology, they must comply with the standards. Some of the requirements include the following:

  1. Reports and publications that have been converted to PDF must comply with Section 508 requirements as of the effective date of this web policy. All previous PDF files will be left as they are. If you need assistance in any of those files, please contact our HUD OIG web manager.

  2. Images on the site contain 'alt tags,' which aid users who listen to the content of the site by using a screen reader, rather than reading the site. Text transcripts accompany audio clips and closed captioning is available on videos. If you are using screenreaders or require alternate versions of Adobe Acrobat, you may find it useful to visit Adobe's alternate reader page.
