How to Become a Teacher

DoDEA Hiring Process

DoDEA teachers are fully-qualified, professional educators with a current valid U.S. teaching license or who meet the DoDEA criteria for certification.  Any teacher interested in working for DoDEA, must be a U.S. citizen. We recruit and screen applicants from the local commuting area first and hire fully-qualified teaching professionals for placement in our schools.  Former military members may be eligible for veterans’ preference over other applicants. Veterans' preference applies, to virtually all new appointments in both the competitive and excepted service.  Family members of military and civilian sponsors are also eligible for hiring preferences in the overseas area. Hiring locally allows DoDEA to augment the school staff very quickly to meet the needs of our highly-mobile military communities. Another benefit of hiring locally is affords family members the opportunity to secure employment.  Military and civilian family members who move frequently are provided a chance to find employment and further their careers. However, when DoDEA is unable to find local highly-qualified candidates, we normally recruit from other areas within DoDEA. And if we are unsuccessful, we send our request to DoDEA Headquarters in Arlington, VA. for a CONUS hire from the United States.

DoDEA employs professional educators that are U.S. citizens who hold current and valid U.S. teaching credentials or are DoDEA certified. We do distinguish between local hires and CONUS hires. Local hires are already residing in the local commuting area while Continental United States (CONUS) hires are recruited and hired from the United States. The salary for local-hire and CONUS-hire teachers is based on their education and years of experience. To ensure successful recruitment and retention of professional teachers from the United States, DoDEA offers to cover moving expenses and pay certain housing costs such as rent and utilities. Our teachers are exceptional professionals and we are able to hire and retain top talent by offering competitive salaries and benefits.

DoDEA Does Not Post Educator Vacancies.

Persons interested in applying to teach with DoDEA must apply through the EAS (Employment Application System).

DoDDS vs DDESS

DoDEA Pacific consists of four school districts. The DoDDS Districts are Japan, Korea, and Okinawa. The DDESS district is located in Guam. All teachers applying to work in DoDEA Pacific must apply under the Educator Application System (EAS). However, the qualification requirements differ depending if you are applying for DDESS or DoDDS schools.  The DoDDS districts fall under Title 20 and DDESS adheres to Title 10.

Individuals applying to teach in the Guam District must have a state teaching certification and must be certifiable within DoDEA. US Citizenship is required. Individuals applying within the Guam district may also qualify for the military spouse preference program.
