Department of Housing and Urban Development
The mission of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is to create strong, sustainable, inclusive communities and quality affordable homes for all. HUD works to strengthen the housing market to bolster the economy and protect consumers; meet the need for quality affordable rental homes: utilize housing as a platform for improving quality of life; build inclusive and sustainable communities free from discrimination; and transform the way HUD does business.
HUD has a range of programs that provide housing support to low-income families, including those who have someone living with HIV/AIDS. Among these is the Housing Opportunities for Persons with HIV/AIDS (HOPWA) program. HOPWA provides both formula and competitive grants and technical assistance to States, local governments, and nonprofit organizations. These funds support housing assistance and related supportive services for low-income persons living with HIV/AIDS and their families. HUD’s housing efforts also help address issues of discrimination and stigma that have created barriers to achieving stable living situations.
Learn more about the HOPWA program here. Locate a local HOPWA provider.
HUD is a lead Federal agency in the implementation of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy. Read about its role here. Read its Operational Plan.
