The American Academy of Arts and Sciences announced that Bob Colwell, deputy director, DARPA Microsystems Technology Office (MTO), will join its elite membership. Some of the others elected into the Academy this year are Hillary Rodham Clinton, Sir Paul McCartney, Clint Eastwood, Mel Brooks, Melinda F. Gates and Amazon founder Jeffery Bezos.
Colwell came to DARPA in 2011 after a successful tenure at Intel Corporation that culminated in his being named an Intel Fellow. The Academy selected Colwell for his work as the Chief Architect of the Pentium microprocessor.
“DARPA recruited Bob to bring his insights and knowledge to computational Defense needs,” said DARPA Acting Director, Kaigham J. Gabriel. “Bob is not only a brilliant technogeek, he also has demonstrated the ability to take concepts into practice and production. His unique perspective is of great value to the DoD and will be of great credit to the Academy.”
“Admission into this very elite group is well deserved,” added Thomas Lee, director, DARPA MTO. “Members of The American Academy of Arts and Sciences are the people who make our civilization a civilization. Bob is the most well-read and well-rounded person I know. He is even a gifted classical and rock guitar player. He will be a fine addition to the Academy’s ranks.”
Members of the Academy include some of the world’s most distinguished artists, scholars, civic and corporate leaders and scientists who provide nonpartisan guidance for research on today’s most difficult problems. Colwell will be inducted on October 6, 2012.
