2010 Census

2010 Census Operations News Briefing — On Nov. 1 at 2 p.m. EDT, Census Bureau Director Robert Groves will provide a status update on the 2010 Census at the National Press Club in Washington.

Demographic

Fertility of American Women: 2008 — Utilizes data from two sources: the June 2008 Supplement to the Current Population Survey (CPS) and the 2008 American Community Survey (ACS). The CPS data, national-level only, provide a historical perspective showing the lifetime fertility experience of women, while the ACS data, provided at the state level, focus on the current fertility experiences of women with a birth in the last year. The data are shown by various demographic characteristics, such as race, Hispanic origin, educational attainment and nativity. New topics examined in this year's report include births to cohabitating women, lifetime fertility patterns for women with higher education and unemployment levels for new moms. (Scheduled for release in early November.)

School Enrollment in the United States: 2009 — Statistics describing a wide variety of demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the country's students at all levels of school, from nursery to graduate. The tables provide information by age, sex, race, Hispanic origin, family income, type of college, employment status and vocational course enrollment — all for the nation as a whole. The data come from the Current Population Survey; therefore, historical tables are provided with annual statistics back in some cases as far as 1956. (Scheduled for release in early November.)

Who in the United States Sends and Receives Remittances? An Initial Analysis of the Monetary Transfers Data from the August 2008 CPS Migration Supplement — Monetary transfers, commonly called "remittances," refer to personal transfers of money to and from relatives or friends who are living abroad. This report presents initial results on the prevalence, frequency and amount of transfers sent and received. This supplement is noteworthy because it was the first time questions on monetary transfers were included in a federally sponsored, nationally representative survey. (Scheduled for release in mid-November.)

America's Families and Living Arrangements — This series of tables provides an annual look at the socioeconomic characteristics of families and households at the national level, including median household size, median age of first marriage and how many children lived with a grandparent. (Scheduled for release in November.)

Economic Indicators — The Census Bureau releases statistics that provide monthly, quarterly and yearly updates on key measures of the nation's economic condition. Upcoming releases in October include new home sales, advance report on durable goods manufacturers' shipment, inventory and orders. Census Bureau Opens Research Laboratory in Minneapolis — The U.S. Census Bureau, in partnership with the University of Minnesota, will open a new Research Data Center (RDC) laboratory on the university's campus. RDCs are secure Census Bureau facilities where researchers from academia, federal agencies and other institutions with approved projects receive restricted access to unpublished Census Bureau demographic and economic microdata files. Census Bureau Director Robert Groves will participate in the ribbon-cutting ceremony. (Scheduled for release Oct. 27.)

Facts for Features

Veterans Day (Nov. 11) — In honor of our nation's veterans and this federal holiday, the Census Bureau is releasing a wide array of statistics focusing on the veterans in the country, the population count, their racial and ethnic backgrounds and the number who vote. (Scheduled for release in October.)

Holiday Season — To commemorate this time of year, the Census Bureau is releasing a collection of facts and figures related to Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and New Year's Day. (Scheduled for release in November.)

American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month (November) — In November, we celebrate the culture and contributions of the 5 million American Indian and Alaska Natives that live in the United States. The Census Bureau recognizes this month with a collection of demographic and economic data for the American Indian and Alaska Native population. (Scheduled for release in November.)

American Community Survey

American Community Survey Briefs — Oct. 12 — These 12 analytical briefs are the second set of briefs covering topics based on the 2009 American Community Survey data that was released Sept. 28. The topics include public transportation use, property value, rental market conditions, labor force participation, employment, public assistance, science and engineering degrees, foreign-born place of birth, nativity status and citizenship, foreign-born year of entry, language and the Haitian population. Demographic

Foreign-Born Population of the United States: 2009 — Oct. 19 — How do foreign-born U.S. residents compare with their children in areas such as educational attainment, income and poverty status? This table series provides a range of social and economic characteristics for the foreign-born population and their children. It is the only source of data that provides profiles of the foreign-born population by generation. Finances of Selected State and Local Government Employee Retirement Systems: 2nd Quarter 2010 — Oct. 13 — This quarterly survey provides national summary data on the revenues, expenditures and composition of assets of the 100 largest state and local public employee retirement systems in the United States. These 100 systems comprise 89.4 percent of financial activity among such entities, based on the 2007 Census of Governments. This survey presents the most current data about investment decisions by state and local public employee retirement systems which are among the largest types of institutional investors in the U.S. financial markets.
