Upcoming

2010 Census

Distribution of 2010 Census Questionnaires Begins in Areas Without Mail Delivery — On March 1, census workers will begin delivery of 2010 Census forms to residents that lack city-style street addresses mostly in rural areas. The workers will update or confirm the location and will leave a census form. Residents are encouraged to promptly fill out the forms and mail them back in postage-paid envelopes. (Scheduled for release March 1.)

Delivery of 2010 Census Advance Letters Begins — Letters telling residents that they will soon receive a 2010 Census questionnaire in the mail go out starting March 8. Years of research have shown that higher percentages of people receiving the mailed census questionnaire return a completed form after they receive the advance letter compared with those who receive merely the census form with a simultaneous request to return it. (Scheduled for release March 8.)

Mailing of 2010 Census Forms Begins — More than 120 million households across the nation will soon receive 2010 Census questionnaires as mailing begins March 15. Residents are encouraged to promptly fill out the forms and mail them back in postage-paid envelopes. (Scheduled for release March 15.)

Mailing of Bilingual (English/Spanish) 2010 Census Forms Begins — For the first time in census history, bilingual forms (English/Spanish) will be mailed to neighborhoods with a traditionally high number of Spanish-speaking residents. (Scheduled for release March 15.)

2010 Census

Census Bureau Launches Online Mapping Tool Showing 2000 Census Response Rates — Feb. 25 — The Census Bureau unveiled a new online mapping tool that allows communities to prepare for the 2010 Census by seeing how well they did mailing back their 2000 Census forms. After the 2010 Census forms are mailed out in mid-March, the online map will be updated so that users will be able to compare their 2010 Census progress to the 2000 Census rates. For every 1 percent increase in mail response, taxpayers will save an estimated $85 million in federal funds. President Obama Records Message Urging Participation in 2010 Census — Feb. 19 — President Barack Obama recorded a public service announcement encouraging national participation in the 2010 Census for distribution to television and radio stations. Census Partnerships Grow to 200,000; Surpass Number of Partners in 2000 — Feb. 23 — The number of partners supporting the 2010 Census now exceeds 200,000, greatly surpassing the 140,000 that signed on to support the 2000 Census. To date, partners have donated 35,088 training locations, saving taxpayers an estimated $338.5 million in rent. Partners motivate people to fill out and mail back their census questionnaires -- an important role not only because of the local impact the census has but also because every 1 percent increase in mail response saves taxpayers about $85 million.
