17th Training Wing 17th Training Wing

The mission of the 17th Training Wing at Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas, is to produce intelligence specialists and firefighters for all the uniformed services.

The wing's heritage is from one of the original 13 wings of the Air Force.  This was the unit that flew the Doolittle Raid. It was the first U.S. air unit to sink an enemy submarine during World War II. It was the first to bomb all three Axis countries, and the first to earn the French Croix de Guerre with Palm.

After World War II, the wing had a brief run as the first and only TR-1 wing in the Air Force. It  supported Air Force intelligence requirements during the Persian Gulf War before inactivating the following summer.   The 17th was pulled out of retirement and returned to active duty July 1, 1993.
