Chicago Man Sentenced to Over 16 Years for Heroin Conspiracy and Causing Overdose Death and Injury
A man who sold heroin that killed one person and nearly killed another was sentenced on September 17, 2012, to more than 16 years in federal prison.
Walter Redawn Dixon, 31, from Chicago, Illinois, received the prison term after an April 11, 2012 guilty plea to one count of conspiracy to distribute 100 grams or more of heroin within 1,000 feet of Polk Elementary School and Coe College in Cedar Rapids.
In a plea agreement and at the sentencing hearing, Dixon admitted the heroin he distributed caused the death of one of his customers in June 2011 and a near-fatal overdose of another of his customers in July 2011.
Dixon was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade. Dixon was sentenced to 194 months' imprisonment to be followed by an eight-year term of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay a special assessment of $100. There is no parole in the federal system.
Dixon is being held in the United States Marshal's custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Dan Chatham and was investigated by the Ad Hoc Heroin Overdose Task Force which is comprised of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Johnson County Sheriff's Office, Cedar Rapids Police Department, and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Task Force consisting of the DEA; the Department of Homeland Security; the Linn County Sheriff's Office; the Cedar Rapids Police Department; the Marion Police Department; the Iowa City Police Department; the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement; the ATF; the Sixth Judicial District Department of Correctional Services; and the Iowa National Guard.
