Norwich University Student Sentenced to 85 Months for Gun Crimes

The Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Vermont stated that August Nommik, 22, of Newport and Northfield, Vermont, was sentenced earlier this month to 85 months imprisonment for firearms offenses by United States Senior District Court Judge J. Garvan Murtha, in Brattleboro.

Nommik's sentence followed his April 2012 guilty plea to one count of possessing a gun in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and another count of conspiring with others to carry and use a firearm during and in relation to a drug trafficking crime. In court papers, the United States explained that Nommik's criminal conduct consisted of smuggling firearms, including assault-rifles, into Canada, where he exchanged the guns for drugs, including cocaine, which he brought back to the United States to sell. At the time he committed the offenses, Nommik was a student at Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont.

This case was investigated by the United States ATF, as well as the United States Border Patrol, working in cooperation with Canadian law enforcement authorities.

Nommik was represented by Federal Public Defender Michael Desautels. Assistant United States Attorney Michael Drescher handled the prosecution.
