What percentage of public employees are devoted to criminal justice at the state and local levels, and by which functions?

In 2006, about 13% (or 2.2 million persons) of all public employees at the state and local levels worked in the criminal justice field. About 45% of the justice employees working at the state and local levels were in police protection, 20% worked in judicial and legal capacities, and 35% worked in corrections.
