Redby Man Sentenced for Possessing a Sstolen 12-Gauge Shotgun

MINNEAPOLIS – Earlier today in federal court, a 19-year-old Redby man was sentenced for possessing a stolen 12-gauge shotgun. United States District Court Chief Judge Michael J. Davis sentenced Damien Charles Jones to 30 months in prison on one count of possession of a stolen firearm. Jones was indicted on September 12, 2011, and pleaded guilty on December 7, 2011.

In his plea agreement, Jones admitted that on January 11, 2011, he possessed the shotgun, knowing it was stolen. In addition, the shotgun had a barrel less than 18 inches long, which is also against the law. Police recovered the gun after responding to a report of "shots fired" in the area. This case was the result of an investigation by the Red Lake Tribal Police Department and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin S. Ueland.

Note, this case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative launched by the U.S. Justice Department in 2001 to promote a multi-jurisdictional, comprehensive approach to reducing gun crime in America. PSN provides resources to strengthen law enforcement and crime prevention partnerships that work to make our streets and communities safer.
