Previously Convicted Felon Pleads Guilty to the Possession of a Firearm
NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA — KENDRICK DAVID WILKERSON, age 24, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, pleaded guilty today to a one–count charge for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon before United States District Court Judge Ivan L.R. Lemelle, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.
According to court documents, on May 25, 2010, WILKERSON was in possession of an Intratec TEC–9 9mm pistol with an obliterated serial number and 28 rounds in an extended magazine. WILKERSON was exiting a house in Algiers when he was detained by NOPD officers who were about to execute a search warrant on the townhouse. The officers discovered the TEC–9 in plain view inside a vehicle driven by WILKERSON parked in front of the residence.
A check by the NOPD revealed that WILKERSON has been thrice convicted for felonies that qualify as predicate offenses: on October 30, 2007, he was convicted for Aggravated Assault Upon a Peace Officer with a Firearm and Possession of Cocaine in Orleans Parish Criminal District Court; on the same date [concurrent sentences]; and on March 6, 2008, he was convicted of Possession of a Controlled Substance in Houston, Texas.
WILKERSON faces a maximum term of imprisonment of ten (10) years, a maximum fine of $250,000, and up to three (3) years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment. Sentencing is set for July 25, 2012.
The case was investigated by the New Orleans Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives and was prosecuted by Assistant U. S. Attorneys Edward Rivera and Abram McGull of the Violent Crime Unit.
