Colorado Man Guilty of Possessing Unregistered Firearms

United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that David McKeehan, age 48, of Thornton, Colorado, appeared before U.S. District Judge Jeffrey L. Viken on April 5, 2012, and pleaded guilty to a charge of Possession of an Unregistered Firearm. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 10 years’ imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine.

In June 2010, after a traffic stop by the South Dakota Highway Patrol, law enforcement found two sawed–off shotguns and an SKS in McKeehan’s vehicle, none of which were registered to him. The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, & Explosives, the South Dakota Highway Patrol, and the Meade County Sheriff’s Office. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Kelderman.

A presentence investigation was ordered, and a sentencing date was set for July 27, 2012. The defendant was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal pending sentencing.
