Pottawattamie County Resident Sentenced for Being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm

COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA — On March 27, 2012, Merle Leon Ivey, age 29, a resident of Council Bluffs, Iowa was sentenced to 24 months imprisonment for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. Southern District of Iowa District Court Judge John Jarvey also ordered Ivey to serve a three year term of supervised release following incarceration. Ivey entered a guilty plea on November 3, 2011, to being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm and agreed to forfeit to the United States the firearm he possessed.

On April 18, 2011, a .32 caliber semi–automatic pistol was recovered from Ivey by Council Bluffs, Iowa, police as they were investigating a child neglect call in the area of 25th Street and 3rd Ave., Council Bluffs. Ivey had been convicted of a felony offense in Nebraska in 2005.

The investigation was conducted by the Council Bluffs, Iowa, Police Department, the Pottawattamie County, Iowa, Attorney’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.
