Washington, Feb 5, 2011 -

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen issued the following statement on the announcement that the Cuban Government has charged Alan Gross and it intends to seek a 20 year sentence against him:

“The Cuban government’s announcement that it intends to seek a 20 year sentence against Alan Gross – a maximum sentence – is deeply troubling.  Mr. Gross has worked in international development for over 25 years and was in Cuba providing support to members of the Cuban Jewish community when he was arrested.  For over a year, he has been detained by the Cuban government without being charged, in violation of international standards of due process.  These charges are unwarranted, and represent an extraordinary miscarriage of justice by Cuba.  I will continue to work with my colleagues in Congress and the Administration, as well as with the Gross family, to secure Mr. Gross’ rapid and unconditional release.”
