Belcourt Man Sentenced for Possession of Firearm by Convicted Felon
BISMARCK – U.S. Attorney Timothy Q. Purdon announced that on Sept. 28, 2012, Jordan M. Short, 28, of Belcourt, N.D., was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Daniel L. Hovland on a charge of possession of firearm by convicted felon.
Judge Hovland sentenced Short to serve three years and 10 months in federal prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release. Short was ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Crime Victim's Fund.
On October 5, 2011, Short was driving a motor vehicle on the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation near Belcourt, N.D. A Bureau of Indian Affairs Officer attempted to stop him for a traffic violation. Short refused to stop and fled from the officers in the vehicle and on foot. After Short left the vehicle, on the front passenger seat, officers found a 9 mm handgun. Short was prohibited from possessing a firearm because of his felony convictions in Rolette County District Court in 2004 for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and theft of property and in Cass County District Court in 2006 for aggravated assault.
The case was investigated by the ATF, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs - Turtle Mountain Agency.
Assistant U.S. Attorney David Hagler prosecuted the case.
