Illinois Man Sentenced for Illegal Possession of Ammunition
Madison, Wis. — John W. Vaudreuil, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Gerald McClellan, 23, Freeport, Ill., was sentenced today by Chief U.S. District Judge William M. Conley to two years in prison, for unlawfully possessing ammunition after being convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence. McClellan pleaded guilty to this charge on March 7, 2012.
On September 24, 2011, there was a major shooting incident at the 700 block of South Gammon Road, Madison. Police recovered 39 shell casings at the scene. Surveillance videos from local businesses showed McClellan holding a chrome semiautomatic pistol.
McClellan was interviewed after his September 27 arrest and he admitted possessing and discharging a 9mm pistol. Only one type of 9mm shell casings were recovered at the scene. In 2009, McClellan was convicted of domestic battery in Illinois, which prohibits him from possessing firearms and ammunition under federal law.
The charge against McClellan was the result of an investigation by the Madison Police Department and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The prosecution of this case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rita M. Rumbelow.
