  3. The 2013 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards were created in 1995 to recognize middle level and high school students for helping the less fortunate, promoting health and safety, protecting the environment, or volunteering in other ways.

    ...
Arkansas' top youth volunteers of 2012 were Joseph McCollum, 16, of McGehee and Alexandria Hunter, 14, of Arkadelphia. Joseph was honored for playing a pivotal role in expanding a Boys and Girls Club meal program that feeds children from poor families in his county. Alexandria was recognized for packaging party supplies into “birthday bags” and distributing them to food pantries and a women and children’s shelter so that families with little or no money can still celebrate birthdays. They both received $1000 and a free trip to DC where they were honored for their commitment to service.

Applicants for 2013 awards must complete their online application by November 6, 2012. Students in grades 5-12 are invited to apply for Prudential Spirit of Community Awards if they have made meaningful contributions to their communities through volunteer service within the past 12 months.

  6. I was deeply saddened to hear of the loss of four Americans in Libya, including Mr. Smith and Ambassador Stevens. My thoughts and prayers are with their families and loved ones. Yesterday’s attacks on the U.S. Embassy in Cairo and the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi are stark reminders that radical Islam is a clear and present danger to peaceful democracy. America has done nothing warranting an apology. This violence and murder are cowardly, unjustified and must not go unanswered. Swift justice should be our focus.

  8. Video from a press conference I participated in earlier this morning regarding the House's solution to looming sequestration cuts, which will devastate our military's capabilities.
  9. Eleven years after the Pentagon and the World Trade Center were struck by radical Islamic terrorists, Americans remember the acts of heroism and sacrifice that occurred in the aftermath. The agony of those who have lost loved ones in the war on terror continues to be felt every single day. From New York City, Washington, D.C. and a grassy field in Pennsylvania to the sands of Iraq and Afghanistan, the lives of those we’ve lost have not been forgotten. Today, let us reflect on the courage of our fellow citizens and our men and women in uniform, and honor all those who have and continue to stand on the front lines, fighting to keep us safe.
  10. A big congratulations to:

    - Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Richard E. Swan of Marked Tree
    - Col. (Ret.) James “Pat” Ewing of Sheridan - deceased
    - Col. (Ret.) Russell D. Graves of Mena
    - Col. (Ret.) Alicia “Cissy” Rucker of Little Rock

    - Col. (Ret.) David A. Lively of Hope

and Col. (Ret.) Roy “Doug” House of Cato (a former member of my staff!) on being inducted into the Arkansas Military Academy's Officer Candidate School Hall of Fame on Saturday!

Today, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton did just that. You can read about it here: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/08/world/asia/state-department-blacklists-militant-haqqani-network.html?pagewanted=print

mericans have seen the national debt rise by more than $5 trillion. President Obama ignored the recommendations of his own Debt Commission and repeatedly pushed for budgets that would make our debt crisis even worse. And while the House has passed a responsible plan that restores spending discipline under Chairman Paul Ryan’s leadership, the Senate remains AWOL – having failed to pass a budget in over 1,200 days. Today’s bleak milestone provides 16,000,000,000,000 reminders that President Obama and his friends in the Senate have no plan to address our national debt.
