Civic leaders, politicians and families gathered at Jungle Island, Miami this weekend to honor South Florida’s newest soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines.

With ceremonial support from the 13th Army Band, hundreds of enlistees from each branch were individually recognized for their commitment to the nation’s defense and sworn in together.

“You will re-invent our nation into a better America because of your service, because of your loyalty,” said Miami-Dade County School Superintendent Alberto Carvalho.

The joint event was organized by, “Our Community Salutes, ” (OCS) a nationwide, non-profit, grassroots effort designed to honor high school seniors who have made the decision to enlist in the U.S. Armed Forces. For the first time ever the organization has branched into South Florida with the help of civilian businesses and OCS South Florida Chairman, Raul Mas.

Special guest speaker, Brigadier General (retired) Hector E. Pagan had a unique message for the parents of the enlistees. “I know what you parents are going through…My own daughter served in Iraq.”

The 13th Army Band played prelude music, a service medley honoring each branch of the military and a post-lude of, “God Bless America,” during which many in the crowd sang along.

“Thanks to the band, the band did great,” said General Pagan.
