Public Service Recognition Week:
“Spirit of Service”

In celebration of Public Service Recognition Week (PSRW),
May 6-12, 2012, the Director of Administration and Management, Michael L. Rhodes, hosted the PSRW Department of Defense “Spirit of Service” Ceremony and Concert on Wednesday,
May 9 at 11:30 a.m. in the Pentagon Center Courtyard.

The event recognized 34 outstanding civilian public servants across the Department who display the core qualities of Honor, Integrity and Excellence in their everyday service and featured remarks by Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton B. Carter and Michael L. Rhodes, the Director of Administration and Management.

Representatives from each of the Military Services and the Office of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff presented certificates of recognition to each of the honorees. These leaders included:

  • The Honorable Michael B. Donley, Secretary of the Air Force
  • The Honorable Raymond E. Mabus, Jr., Secretary of the Navy
  • The Honorable Thomas R. Lamont, Assistant Secretary of the Army, Manpower & Reserve Affairs
  • Vice Admiral Harry B. Harris, Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

A concert by the U.S. Air Force Max Impact show band and a reception followed the ceremony.

The Director of Administration and Management also hosted the PSRW DoD “Spirit of Service” Shadow Day on Friday, May 11, where 20 students from John Tyler Elementary School of Washington, DC, the DoD’s adopted school, visited the Pentagon and learned about the importance of public service through several special activities.

Celebrated since 1985, PSRW is an annual nationwide public education campaign sponsored by the Partnership for Public Service and honors the men and women who serve our nation as federal, state, county and local government employees.
