Life

As a member of the Pro-Life Caucus, I firmly believe the right to life extends to all people ā€“ both the born and unborn. I believe that the government has a responsibility to protect life from the moment it begins ā€“ at conception.

In the 112th Congress, I introduced the Heartbeat Informed Consent Act. This legislation requires that abortion providers make the heartbeat of an unborn child visible and audible to its mother as part of her full and informed consent.

I am proud to co-sponsor the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, which would prohibit any expenditure of federal funds that would go toward covering the costs of abortions. Iā€™m also a proud co-sponsor of the Protect Life Act, which would specifically amend the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) to ban federal funds allocated for its programs from being put toward abortions.

I applaud those health care providers and insurers who consistently refuse to acknowledge abortion as an option for any of their patients or subscribers, respectively. These groups operate some of the finest healthcare facilities and provide some of the best health plans in the nation; nevertheless, they are often deemed ineligible for federal aid or partnerships because of their opposition to abortion. In support of these caregivers and organizations, I have co-sponsored the Abortion Non-Discrimination Act, which would prevent health care entities from being denied federal assistance on the basis that their policies do not permit abortions and the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act, which would amend the PPACA to permit a health plan to decline coverage of specific items and services that are contrary to the religious beliefs of the sponsor, issuer or other entity offering the plan without penalty, and still be considered a qualified plan under the Act.

Furthermore, I am staunchly opposed to taxpayer funding for organizations like Planned Parenthood, which, according to its own annual report, performed 332,278 abortions in 2009 alone. That is why I am a co-sponsor of the Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act, which would prohibit Title X funding from being granted to any entity that performs abortion.

I assure you that my 100 percent pro-life voting record will continue as I serve my third term in the U.S. House of Representatives.
