The Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center has come a long way since the merging of the Department of Defense public health and global surveillance assets in February 2008. Provides standard clinical case definitions used by the DoD to guide military public health officers, health-care providers, and laboratories in identifying and reporting specific diseases and injuries. The AFHSC maintains and publishes these guidelines with input from the three services and the DoD Joint Preventive Medicine Policy Group.
During the influenza season, the AFHSC produces a weekly summary of respiratory illness activity among US military health system beneficiaries, including both service members and their families. This summary report includes electronic, medical and lab-based surveillance data from the MHS as well as surveillance data from the DoD's overseas research laboratories and their partners.
