Course Description

An in-depth look at consultation and resolving conflicts between development plans and historic preservation values under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act by the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation.

The Advanced Section 106 Seminar focuses on the effective management of complex or controversial undertakings that require compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. Taught in a smaller, interactive setting, this course encourages group discussion and problem solving. The seminar is designed for experienced Section 106 users who are already familiar with the regulations. The curriculum focuses on the challenges of seeking consensus and resolving adverse effects to historic properties.

• How to effectively achieve win-win outcomes and resolve disputes
• How to identify creative ways to address conflicts between development plans and preservation values
• How to negotiate and prepare agreement documents under Section 106

Who should attend?

The seminar is designed for environmental and cultural resources personnel who have previously attended the ACHP's Section 106 Essentials Course or have received similar introductory training for Section 106, and/or who have experience handling Section 106 issues.

AICP CM Information  

The ACHP is pleased to be a Certification Maintenance (CM) Provider for the American Planning Association/American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) for The Advanced Section 106 Seminar. AICP members may obtain 6 CM credits for this course. A sign in sheet will be available at the registration table when you arrive at the course.

2012 course locations and dates

The seminars are one day and meet from 8:30 a.m. 4:30 p.m. These are limited enrollment courses of no more than 25 participants, so we encourage you to register early. Click a course location for more detailed information.

Faculty

All courses are taught by senior ACHP staff who have significant practical experience with Section 106 issues and developing program improvements.

Cost

Payment can be made by credit card or check. Federal employees may submit an SF182.

Registration = $450.00 (Includes light breakfast and afternoon break.)

Cancellations

Registrants who cancel at least 14 days prior to the start of the course will receive a full refund minus a 15% processing fee. No refunds will be given for cancellations made fewer than 14 days before the start of the course; however, substitutions may be made at no cost up until three days before the course begins. All cancellations must be made in writing.
