On behalf of President Obama and the American people, please accept my sincere congratulations as you mark the tenth anniversary of the restoration of Timor-Leste’s sovereignty and inaugurate your new president. This is an occasion to reflect on your rich history and the struggles you have endured as you work toward a future filled with reconciliation, renewal, peace and prosperity.

The Timorese people have a lot to celebrate. Your economy is growing, your security situation is stable, and genuine national reconciliation is underway. April’s free, fair and peaceful presidential elections were the result of a race that was marked by a terrific battle of ideas. I want to congratulate President Ruak on his inauguration, and offer him the full support of the American people as he assumes his new office.

The United States and Timor-Leste are bound together by mutual respect and shared interests. We are committed to strengthening this partnership to promote democracy, freedom, and human rights in the decade to come.

As your country continues to develop under President Ruak, know that the United States stands with you, and we send our best wishes for a future of peace, liberty, and prosperity.
