Special Population Estimates for Impacted Counties in the Gulf Coast Area

Hurricanes Katrina and Rita had an unprecedented effect on the Gulf Coast’s population in August and September of 2005.

The Census Bureau designed special methodology to estimate the population sizes of the 117 counties identified by FEMA as eligible for Individual and Public Assistance (IPA). These special estimates are designed to show the estimated population [Excel] size for these counties as of January 1, 2006.

The estimates are not part of the official estimates series because of the unique nature of the methodology and data used.
