Rangel Celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month

WASHINGTON–Congressman Charles Rangel issued the following statement in celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, which recognizes the impact and continued success of the Hispanic community in America from September 15 to October 15, 2012:

"It is with great pleasure that we come together to celebrate the National Hispanic Heritage Month to honor one of the fastest growing ethnic groups in the country.  This year's theme, “Diversity United, Building America's Future Today,” aptly embodies the diversity and contributions of 51-million strong Hispanics in America, who have come from all over Latin America and the Caribbean and have become an integral part of the American fabric.

The Hispanic community has successfully integrated thousands of professionals ranging from award-winning athletes, to doctors, soldiers, lawyers, and public servants into the American society. Economically, culturally, and politically, Hispanics are a vital part of our nation who make America a better and stronger country.  Hispanic Heritage Month is a prime opportunity to build and strengthen ties to this vital and vibrant community.

I'm proud to represent a congressional district with one of the largest and diverse Hispanic populations in the country, such as Dominican Americans, Puerto Ricans, and Mexicans. We have great organizations that provide invaluable services to my Hispanic constituents: Alianza Dominicana, the Mexican Community Center (CECOMEX), Casa de la Herencia Cultural Puertorriquena, Inc., Institute for the Puerto Rican and Hispanic Elderly, El Museo del Barrio, Julio de Burgos Cultural Center, Casabe House Development Fund, Inc., the Dominican Women's Development Center, El Centro Civico Cultural Dominicano, Inc., the PR Dream, Boriken Neighborhood Health Center, Dominican Sunday, Inc., The Dominican Bar Association, the Hispanic Community Organization for Life, El Asociacion Tepeyac de New York, New York City Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and the New York State Federation of Hispanic Chambers of Commerce. I am grateful for their continuous efforts to improve the lives of Hispanics in our district.

Democratic Members of the House and President Barack Obama are committed to addressing their issues -- from working to create millions of new jobs, providing access to quality, affordable healthcare and supporting President Obama’s historic action to provide young people, who have only known America as their home, with an opportunity to work lawfully and live in this country without the threat of immigration enforcement.  My Democratic Colleagues and I will tirelessly continue to push the DREAM Act forward into passage, so that future generations of Hispanic families can continue to contribute to the success and greatness of our nation.

Join me in honoring the dedication, patriotism, and various contributions Hispanics have made to our economy, culture and our society. Visit the City College of New York's website for more information on events and ways you can join in the celebrations.
