WASHINGTON, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader-Elect Nancy Pelosi released
the following statement at a press conference this afternoon about the two-day
House Democratic economic forum taking place today and tomorrow:
"Im pleased that we have a record turnout -- more than 130 Members
of the Democratic Caucus are coming together today and tomorrow to exchange
views and share information and ideas that will lay a foundation on which to
build a Democratic economic plan. This is a chance to hear from experts across
the political spectrum to discuss what needs to be done.
"As I said last week when the President dismissed the Treasury Secretary
and his top economic adviser, the Bush economic plan has not worked, and their
dismissals show that this has finally dawned on the President of the United
States. The President can shuffle his staff all he wants, but it is his plan
that has failed.
"The unemployment rate is now at 6 percent, the highest in more than eight
years. Yet the President and Congressional Republicans have refused to extend
unemployment benefits for the nearly 1 million Americans who are out of work
and whose unemployment insurance will expire three days after Christmas.
We must have a plan for economic growth that creates jobs, is fair and
is fiscally sound. This forum will help us build consensus among our Members
on the best way to spark an effective and lasting economic recovery.
