Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) applauded President Clinton and Vice President Gore for the appointment of the Presidio Trust Board today. "With the appointment of such a distinguished board, we can now be assured that the Presidio will thrive as a glorious national park for all to enjoy," said Pelosi. "I am pleased that the President has selected trustees who have demonstrated an early and strong commitment to the Presidio, and who have assisted in the transition of the Presidio from post to park."
As the legislation requires, the President's six appointees have expertise in the fields of resource conservation, city planning, finance, and real estate development. The first-year goals for the board include the phased-in transfer of properties from the National Park Service to be managed and leased by the Trust, and creation of a 15 year business plan for reducing federal costs at the Presidio. "It will be up to the board to reduce the cost to taxpayers over the next 15 years, but this must happen within the context of preserving the Presidio as a national park," Pelosi said.
"Under the leadership of the Presidio Trust Board, and with the involvement of our community, we can marshall our intellectual resources to advance environmental, educational, and international ideals at the Presidio," Pelosi stated.
