Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi Secures $29.9 Million for Extending BART to the San Francisco International Airport
$21.4 Million Included for the San Jose Tasman West Light Rail

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), a Member of the House Appropriations Committee, announced that the 1998 Tranportation Appropriations bill, which passed the House today, included $29.9 million for the Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) for an extension of BART to the San Francisco International Airport. "This money puts this project on the right track and avoids further delay. Extending BART to the airport will improve the quality of life for the Bay Area as we move into the 21st Century," Pelosi said.

The Department of Transportation signed a Full Funding Grant Agreement for the project on July 1, 1997. This agreement was needed for BART to enter into contracts for construction. "With this Full Funding Grant Agreement and today's appropriation, BART has the commitment of the Administration and the Congress to see this project through to its completion," Pelosi said.

In addition the 1998 Transportation Appropriations bill also includes $21.4 million for the San Jose Tasman West Light Rail (LRT). These funding levels are included in House-Senate Conference Committee reports.
