May 4, 2003

San Francisco, CA -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi joined hundreds of San Francisco Giants fans today at the Grand Opening of McCovey Point at China Basin Park, the new home of a tee ball park and a 9-foot-tall bronze statue of Giants Hall of Famer Willie McCovey. Below is a transcript of her remarks:

“Thank you, Larry [Baer]. Thank you, Peter Magowan, for your tremendous leadership of the Giants. Thank you, Jack Baer, for making today possible.

“As a fan, I am honored to be here today to help celebrate the grand opening of this park and to pay tribute to Willie McCovey and the dozens of Giants’ greats assembled here today.

“This park and these players bring back so many wonderful memories.

“Willie Mays. Gaylord Perry. Darrell Evans. Dave Dravecky. Will Clark. Tom Haller. Mike McCormick. Barry Bonds. And, of course, Willie McCovey.

“On behalf of San Francisco’s family of elected officials, I would like to salute the Giants for your pursuit of excellence - on and off the field.

“I also want to salute the Giants for creating this beautiful park that gracefully ties together our city’s past and our national pastime. It celebrates the rich baseball history of the Giants and honors the men who played so faithfully over the years.

“It also inspires future generations of baseball fans - by giving our children a place to learn, a place to dream and a place to play.

“Who knows? This T-ball field may bring us baseball’s next generation of Hall of Famers playing for the Giants!

“One thing is certain - all who play here will be following in the footsteps of the great Willie McCovey. During his distinguished career, he thrilled fans with his outstanding skills - earning international esteem as a top-notch baseball player, quiet leader and consummate teammate.

“Thank you, Willie McCovey, for always making that extra effort - both on the ball field and in our community.

“You and this park represent the best of our city.

“Congratulations.”
