NAEP Charter School Pilot StudyCharter school students took the fourth-grade NAEP reading and mathematics assessments at the same time as students in all other schools. Within each of the 150 participating charter schools, a random sample of students participated in either the reading or mathematics assessment. About half participated in reading and about half in mathematics. In total, 3,115 charter school students participated in the reading assessment, and 3,154 charter school students participated in the mathematics assessment. While charter schools are similar to other public schools in many respects, they differ in several important ways, including the makeup of the student population and their location. For example, in comparison to other public schools, higher percentages of charter school fourth-grade students are Black or attend schools in central cities. Who Attends Charter Schools?Grade 4: 2003
