The hospital opened in 1965, replacing the World War IIera hospital that preceded it. As Fort Hood grew, so did the hospital. A massive addition and reconstruction project was completed in 1984, that included more operating rooms, a larger outpatient clinic, more delivery rooms and an upgrade of the entire hospital interior.

Today, the facility has five primary care clinics, four troop medical clinics and 22 specialty clinics. Additionally, it hosts a Family Practice Residency Program, an Emergency Medicine Residency Program and a Phase II Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist Program.

The installation is located 50 miles southwest of Waco and 60 miles northeast of Austin. But it sits right outside of towns that include Copperas Cove, Harker Heights and Temple.
