Going Green: The DFC is committed to becoming the most sustainable campus in the United States by the year 2020. To do this, we are working on a variety of projects that allow us to be more eco-friendly. Some of these projects are:
- GSA has been able to replace 19 leased cars with Neighborhood Electrical Cars saving the tax payer about $80,000 per year;
- Campus solar panels provide more than 15% of the DFC’s electrical needs annually. The combined capacity of all of the solar arrays is enough to power 1,064 residential homes for one year (about 8 MegaWatts of energy). In 2007, GSA installed its first six-acre, 1.2 MW solar PV park that includes 6,192 solar panels at the 623-acre campus in Lakewood, CO. In 2009, GSA received additional funding to add nearly 7 MW more PV.
- Recycled demolished building materials saving approximately $1.5 million dollars; and
- Relandscaped with drought-resistant vegetation (xeriscaping) to reduce water consumption.
