Rangel Recognizes National Women's Health And Fitness Day

New York, NY- Congressman Charles B. Rangel released the following statement on National Women's Health and Fitness Day, September 26, 2012, which was created to empower American women to make positive health choices.

"I am pleased to join millions of women in America to recognize National Women's Health and Fitness Day, which is the largest annual health promotion event aimed at raising awareness on the unique issues that affect women. This is time to encourage women to make smart health choices by equipping them with adequate information and resources.

The healthcare reform law, which I proudly introduced in the House, has played an essential role in providing women with more opportunities for improved health and wellness. The Affordable Care Act allows for all Americans to receive preventative care without co-pays, which is a particularly important benefit for women who seek screenings for breast and cervical cancers. Additionally, the law has taken strong action to prevent insurance providers from charging women higher premiums than men. I will keep fighting to defend and protect these important measures.

Numerous health facilities across New York State are offering interactive fitness activities and educational programs today emphasizing the value of living a healthy lifestyle. In our congressional district, St. Luke's Hospital is one of the many partners working in conjunction with Susan G. Komen for the Cure to conduct activities in honor of National Women's Health and Fitness Day. I applaud the efforts of many organizations throughout our community that are dedicated to women's health and aiding in the promotion of their wellbeing.

Women make up more than half of the world population and have distinctive health concerns that call for specific attention and awareness. Participating in National Women's Health and Fitness Day is particularly important, with the issues of healthcare and a woman's right to choose becoming critical components of this election year's rhetoric. In Congress, I will continue to push for legislation that support women's rights to maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle."
