Dr. McMullen comes to the Kaiserslautern district with a solid background centered on excellence in educational opportunities for all children. She recognizes the hard work and accomplishments that have taken place in the district in the past years and she is committed to supporting those as well as taking the district to even higher levels of sophistication and success for students.
Dr. McMullen began her teaching career in 1973 with the Muscogee County School District in Columbus, Ga. and taught upper elementary mathematics, science and physical education until 1979. She served as coordinator of the Health Improvement Program for the schools until being named Assistant Principal of Blanchard School for Muscogee County in 1984. Dr. McMullen joined the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS) in 1987 when she was selected as Principal of the Frank R. Loyd Elementary School on Fort Benning, Ga. In 1990, she was named Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum for the Fort Benning Community Schools and in 1994 she was named Superintendent. Dr. McMullen has been Superintendent of the Georgia/Alabama District since 2002.
Dr. McMullen earned her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Education from Columbus College, in Columbus, Ga. She received her Specialist in Education certificate in 1982 from Georgia State University in Atlanta, Ga. She earned her Doctorate of Education Degree in 1990 from Auburn University, Auburn, Ala.
Dr. McMullen has been recognized for her outstanding leadership and accomplishments and has earned many awards throughout her career. She received the National Excellence in Education Award, for her unparalleled leadership in promoting and advancing excellence in education during the 2009 AdvancED Conference in Chicago, IL. She was named Girl Scout's Woman of Achievement, participated in the Army Community of Excellence (ACOE) awards program at the Pentagon and received the Commander's Award for Civilian Service. She was named a Columbus State University Outstanding Alumni in 2002 and was inducted into the Columbus State University Hall of Fame in 2005.
In addition to her own awards and recognitions, Dr. McMullen has held high expectations and believed in the personnel in her district. Coming to a district with two recent National Distinguished Principals and the DoDEA Teacher of the Year, Dr. McMullen is used to nurturing excellence. As a result of her nurturing and leadership, four of the Georgia/Alabama District administrators have been named National Distinguished Principals and one of the District Teachers of the Year was selected as DoDEA Teacher of the Year.
