Welcome

The Cognition and Collaboration  Systems group develops, advances, and deploys measurement science in knowledge representation, reasoning, and planning for intelligent systems used in manufacturing and construction applications.  Carries out mission-related measurement science research and services to advance human interactions with intelligent machines, ranging from teleoperation and shared autonomy to fully autonomous behaviors; develop modeling and simulation techniques for intelligent systems; and enable intelligent cyber-physical systems.

MOAST/USARSim Team Wins Third Place in Best Paper Award

A paper entitled "A Mobile Robot Control Framework: From Simulation to Forklift Modeled in the USARSim/MOAST Simulation EnvironmentReality" won third place in best paper award at the 2008 SIMPAR conference in Venice, Italy. While there, a member of the MOAST/USARSim control framework team served on a panel discussion and taught a full day tutorial on the control framework.

DMIS Certification Program Announced at IMTS 2008

In partnership with NIST, the Dimensional Metrology Standards Consortium (DMSC) announced a new Certification Program for the Dimensional Measurement Interface Standard (DMIS) standard at the DMSC's booth in the Quality Pavilion of the International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) show in Chicago, Sept 8 - 13, 2008.   The DMSC is a body of manufacturing suppliers involved in the development of a variety of information standards for manufacturing quality measurement.  Several journalists from the manufacturing quality press showed substantial attention to DMIS certification as evidenced by a Quality Digest "NewsDesk" video (http://www.qualitydigest.com/inside/internal-demo/newsdesk-september-15-2008-imts-edition.html).  Three large metrology supplier corporations, who are actively pursuing DMIS certification, also performed a live interoperability demonstration, in the DMSC booth at IMTS, using (nearly) DMIS-certified software running on two coordinate measuring machines (CMM).  As a result of our presence at the show, several smaller metrology suppliers at IMTS showed keen interest in DMIS certification, including the only remaining manufacturer of CMMs in the U.S.  One large metrology corporation, with the single largest installed base of measurement software in the world, made a commitment to seek DMIS certification.  Also, a large U.S. aerospace system supplier committed to DMSC board membership.  At the heart of certification program is the NIST-developed DMIS test utility designed and written by Dr. Tom Kramer, Guest Researchers in the Intelligent Systems Division.
