Kinesiology

Cutting Edge, Scientifically Based & Relevant for the Army

Why study kinesiology?

Kinesiology is a broad, interdisciplinary field of study that includes specialties such as exercise physiology, biomechanics, sports medicine, sports nutrition, exercise psychology, and exercise epidemiology. Areas of inquiry range in scope from the study of molecular response of cells to the response and adaptation of the whole body. The major will encompass a wide spectrum of performance issues involving muscular and cardiovascular physiology, energy balance, exercise adherence, and skill acquisition and motor control. The Kinesiology major is applicable to a myriad of Army Missions.

The Kinesiology Major is...

"Cutting Edge..."
The disciplinary focus of the Kinesiology major is on physiological, and mechanical aspects of human movement that are aligned with the Army's training and combat needs.

"Scientifically Based..."
The science of human movement has grown exponentially over the last decade. The doctoral training of our faculty and the laboratory facilities in the Center for Physical Development Excellence provide the necessary scientific basis for the advanced study of physical activity and performance.

"Relevant for the Army..."
The Department of Physical Education and the Center for Physical Development Excellence will work closely with other Army agencies such as the U.S. Army Physical Fitness School, the Center for Accessions Research, and the U.S. Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventative Medicine to develop relevant training protocols for the Army.

Honors Program

Cadets who meet the academic requirements and wish to enroll in the optional honors program will take the following two courses as their 11th and 12th major courses. Each cadet will work one-on-one with a thesis advisor conducting applicable research in human performance.

Advanced Individual Academic Development
  • PE 494 Research Methods/Data Analysis
  • PE 495 Honor's Thesis
AIAD Experiences

The Department of Physical Education is currently working with USAREIM, USAPFS, and the Human Dimensions Laboratory (FT Jackson) to develop summer AIADs for Kinesiology majors. Internships are also in the developmental stages with the USOC and the Army Elite Athlete programs. Please contact Dr. Bill Brechue (845-938-3950) for further details about AIAD experiences.
