The games were designed to bring together more than 450 youths from the major southern Malian cities to compete in a variety of sporting events. The athletes were identified as future civic leaders and were hand-picked by their local city leaders to participate in the games. In addition to the games, the youths participated in classes and seminars on leadership, tolerance, anti-extremism and cooperation led by local and American Olympic athletes and local leaders.
