Welcome to the Service’s Wind Turbine Guidelines Advisory Committee webpage.  The Committee came to a consensus agreement on a set of recommendations on March 4, 2010. These recommendations have been provided to the Secretary of the Interior and will be used in the development of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Wind Turbine Guidelines.

Committee Background

On October 24, 2007, Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne announced the appointment of 22 individuals as members of the Wind Turbine Guidelines Advisory Committee.  The Committee was formed and functioned in accordance with the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA).  The scope and objective of the Committee, as outlined in its charter, was to provide advice and recommendations to the Secretary on developing effective measures to avoid or minimize impacts to wildlife and their habitats related to land-based wind energy facilities.  The Committee members represented the varied interests associated with wind energy development and wildlife management.  In March 2010, the Committee provided its recommendations to the Department of the Interior. The recommendations were used by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to develop its Draft Land-Based Wind Energy Guidelines, published in February 2011. Two revised drafts were subsequently produced, incorporating public comment and further advice from the Committee. The Committee's Charter expired and the Committee was terminated in October 2011. Final Land-Based Wind Energy Guidelines were announced in March 2012. Prior to its termination, Committee membership included:
