Reigning Far East mat champions remain in step

Musings and mutterings as Ornauer gasps for breath reaching for the tape that marks the start of Christmas break:

-- Defending Far East High School Wrestling Tournament gold medalists Chris Cournoyer and Tony Presnell of Yokota and reigining Outstanding Wrestler Cameron Butts of Nile C. Kinnick look as though they've still got their groove on, if their performances at Saturday's All-Japan Invitational is any indicator.

-- One would never know Presnell is still bothered by his football shoulder injury.

-- Imagine how good Seoul American would be with Demetrius Johnson (168), Justin Stokes (180) and heavyweight Mark Lieberg healthy and in the lineup? Definitely a threat to topple Kadena from its Far East team championship crown.

-- Is the "Beast of the Far East" tournament on Jan. 10 at Yokosuka going to be a monster or what? That's where we find out who's who at the zoo (apologies to Osan coach David Hemmer).

-- Speaking of Cougars, that battle for the Far East Wrestling Tournament Class A team title is shaping up to be a war for the ages between Osan and Robert D. Edgren. The two teams which, by the way, lead the entire Pacific in girls wrestlers, Osan with five, Edgren with four.

-- 25 days until "Beast," 44 days until "Rumble on the Rock." Stake out your spots.
