U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Chairman Hal Stratton sound bites from the Commission Meeting on the Final Rule and Preamble for the Flammability (Open Flame) of Mattress Sets held on February 16, 2006.

This is a decision making meeting, and that's what we're here to do today. I'm going to move that the Commission approve the regulatory text and preamble for the mattress flammability rule as drafted for publication.

By a vote of three in the affirmative, zero in the negative, the regulation has been approved.

This is the first major regulation ever adopted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. That is a historic day here, and we should be reveling in what we've done. We are going to save seventy-eight percent of those people who might have died in mattress fires in the future per year, and we're going to save eighty-four percent of those people from injuries.

We're doing this in an enormously cost-effective way. Something that also hasn't been reported, but the real work of the economics team and everybody else about what a cost-effective regulation this is, is something that should be noted and something that should be remembered.

End.
