On behalf of President Obama and the American people, I offer warm wishes to the people of Thailand on the occasion of Songkran and the Thai New Year. Songkran comes at a challenging time for Thailand. We are hopeful that this New Year will be a time of renewal and reconciliation and that the festival of Songkran will be an opportunity for Thais to gather with family, friends, and neighbors to honor their rich traditions and culture.

While Thailand continues along its path to resolve its political differences, we remain confident in the strong, enduring bonds between the United States and Thailand, our oldest ally in Asia. The partnership between our governments and the friendship between our peoples provide a foundation for mutual prosperity and security.

On this occasion, I wish Thailand and Thais around the world a peaceful New Year.
