On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I am delighted to congratulate the people of Tuvalu as you celebrate the 33rd anniversary of your independence this October 1.

Our two countries share a long history of friendship and cooperation. We have worked together on both regional and global issues promoting peace, strengthening democracy and security, and building bridges of respect and friendship among nations. The partnership between our two countries will continue to deepen as we look to curb the effects of climate change, reinforce maritime security and bolster our economic development programs.

As you celebrate this special day, know that the United States joins you in the spirit of our continuing friendship and cooperation. I send best wishes for peace and prosperity in the coming year.
