Guam High rallies to stay unbeaten

AGANA HEIGHTS, Guam – Their offense sputtering, appearing to be on their way to certain defeat a week after their biggest victory of the season, the Guam High Panthers turned to L.J. Aguon, Terry Geller and Tegan Brown for a jump start.

Aguon scored twice on fourth-quarter quarterback draws Friday and Geller and Brown each added a touchdown as the Panthers improved their best record in the Pacific to 4-0 by rallying from a six-point third-quarter deficit to beat Okkodo 26-12 on Panthers Field.

“We came out and played poorly from the get-go, a terrible effort; we weren’t executing at all,” said coach Jacob Dowdell of a Panthers team that was coming off a 19-8 win over defending island champion George Washington six days earlier.

Just prior to Friday’s contest, Guam High senior linebacker Brandon “Wolf” Saville aggravated a knee injury that kept him out of the George Washington game. And Damian Dimmick went down with an injury in Friday’s first quarter.

“L.J. and Tegan put the team on their backs, literally,” Dowdell said.

Brown finished with 126 yards on 18 carries plus six tackles, two forced fumbles and an interception. “He was a man out there tonight,” Dowdell said.

Aguon rushed nine times for 71 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown run. With Dimmick hurt, Dowdell turned to Geller, who added 50 yards and a touchdown on eight attempts.

Defensively, the Panthers forced four second-half Bulldogs turnovers. “They took over the game for us,” Dowdell said of a unit that allowed just 38 offensive yards. The Bulldogs scored on a 77-yard fumble return, while a blocked punt set up Okkodo’s second score.

Cody Burpo had seven tackles, a forced fumble and a recovered fumble, and Joshua Foronda added two sacks, two forced fumbles and a recovered fumble.

It was Guam High’s final tune-up for its only non-league contest of the season. The Panthers travel to Okinawa next Saturday for a game at Kubasaki.
