Bamberg takes two from Schweinfurt

SCHWEINFURT, Germany – The Bamberg Barons boys and girls teams rebounded after losses last weekend with a sweep of host Schweinfurt on Friday night.
The Lady Barons captured their third win of the season - second against Schweinfurt - 32-27. The last time the two teams met Dec.3, Bamberg captured a decisive 33-13 victory. The Razorbacks have come a long way since then, according to head coach Julie Heintz. But Schweinfurt had to come a long way Friday in order to avoid another lopsided loss to the Barons.
“We played better than we did against them last time,” Heintz said. “We forced a lot of turnovers, but we could not capitalize.”
Bamberg opened with a 13-4 first quarter run with Natesha Godbee hitting her first three shots. Godbee finished with a double-double, with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Jamilah Lambert hit a shot at the buzzer to give Bamberg momentum heading into the second quarter, but the Razorbacks quickly grabbed it back.
Schweinfurt picked up the first six points of the second quarter and pulled within five before the half. With 1 minute, 50 seconds remaining in the third quarter, Schweinfurt managed to tie the score at 19 before Godbee sunk another buzzer beater to retain the lead for the Barons.
Schweinfurt took its first and only lead of the game with 4:20 remaining, 25-24, but after that it was a back-and-forth battle before the Barons pulled away with some key free throws in the final two minutes.
Despite the loss, Diandra Quashie, Shadaja Gamble and Ashley Leach brought in a total of 24 rebounds for Schweinfurt. Loleen Tomokane was another 10-point scorer for the Barons.
In boys’ action, the Barons got some revenge with a 50-44 victory Friday after falling to the Razorbacks 45-41 in Bamberg on Dec. 3. Both teams now have four victories in Region III.
Schweinfurt led at the half, 25-17, after some phenomenal shooting by Christian Carrillo, who went 5-for-5 from the field. Four of the baskets were from 3-point range. The only shot he seemed to miss in the first half was an attempt from half-court as the buzzer sounded. Carrillo finished as the game’s lead scorer with 18.
It wasn’t enough to hold off the Barons, however, as they outscored Schweinfurt 33-19 in the second half, including an 18-point third quarter.
Late in the game as Schweinfurt attempted to recapture the lead, it appeared Bamberg could not miss from the free throw line.
“This is one of our better performances,” said Tim Smith, head coach of Bamberg. Smith said his team passed better as it tried to move the ball inside to T.J. Cortright and Terry Williams. Cortright finished with 12 points and nine rebounds while Williams and Leontae Lockett each brought in six rebounds. Treshaun Foster had nine points for the Barons.
